Conclave (2024)

Being raised Catholic, I have lived through 2 conclaves and not once have I ever thought about that process. Still, with little to no knowledge about how a new Pope gets elected, I hope it’s anything like how it’s depicted here. Lots of unnecessary drama, sinning, politics… and even more sinning.

Stellar performances all around. Was very impressed by John Lithgow here, as an antagonist I didn’t think he could get me against him but the role he’s given, it’s perfect for him. He has such a calm demeanor even though you know his smile is a mask akin to a luchador, you don’t know who he is. Also Ralph Fiennes is one of my favorite actors so I wholeheartedly and full of bias, love him here.

The story is good. The adaptation of it all shows how this is a great book. The pacing can be slow at times and there’s a lot of political priest jargon that I don’t get. But the 3rd act is fantastic. The overall aesthetic is great, you also never see priests just being people and being on their phone, smoking and shooting the shit. Humanizes humans, what a crazy concept.

A good watch, a slower movie that can be hard to get into at first, but the payoff is a great layered twist.
