Captain America: Brave New World (2025)

Oh yeah… I can just feel all the unnecessary hate this movie is getting…

Captain America: Brave New World is appropriately action packed, in fact there’s more action than I initially thought there was going to be. The fighting scenes are really really good. They really do go out of the way to show you that Sam Wilson is a physically capable Captain America. Honestly for me that was never in question, but you can tell that these fight scenes are for the haters.

Aesthetically speaking, for the most part the movie looks great. There are a few scenes where the cgi wasn’t the best, but I’m never a sci snob, it looked fine to great to me. The biggest cgi scene was Celestial Island, that’s probably going to get the biggest hate honestly, but it looks good enough to service the action and the story. Red Hulk looks fantastic, if the cgi budget was to go to just a singular thing then that would be what needed it the most. The only thing that sucks about the Red Hulk is that a majority of his screen time was in the trailers already, so it took a lot of the mystique away for me.

The cast is great, the side characters aren’t as developed as I’d like, but this movie is called Captain America, the main characters are given the appropriate amount of screen time. As much as I love Tim Blake Nelson, they did not build up his character enough, that mystique that I mentioned earlier was unfittingly reserved for him instead of the Red Hulk. But I get it… marketing… They prioritize people in seats over servicing the film. Harrison Ford continues to show how generationally amazing of a talent he is. He leans into his age and delivers strong performances here and I love him in Shrinking. The dynamic between him and Anthony Mackie are immaculate, they see each other as necessary evils and want to coexist when they can’t stand each other’s principles. Truly American if you think about it. Speaking of Mackie, he elevates his Sam Wilson to another level in my opinion. Still the funny and charismatic character at heart but beams of the responsibility and weight of the shield. His development over the years is something truly under rated. Lastly I want to shout out Carl Lumbly. The emotion he delivers here is chefs kiss, definitely wish he had more screen time.

I loved the score and the soundtrack. The movie actually ends with one of my favorite Kendrick songs. Besides that, Laura Karmpan delivers a great score overall, but she doesn’t create a stinger or definitive anthem for the new Captain America that will be heard for movies to come, so that was a tad disappointing. Even if my ears weren’t elated to the max, my eyes were filled amazingness. Kramer Morgenthau goes hard with the cinematography. The combination of the aerial shots with whole swooping action shield shots are next level. I would argue that the shield has never looked this good before.

Now the shield is good, but the costumes were ok, this might be a hot take but the Captain America fit from The Falcon & Winter Soldier is a lot better than what they use here. That is honestly going to be my biggest complaint about this movie.

The pacing is really fast but not in a bad way, it keeps you focused on what you need to focus on. But the story leaves a lot to be desired. More Red Hulk would have been nice, and this movie has a lower tier post credits scene that honestly isn’t even worth staying for, not Morbius terrible, but not good.

Captain America: Brave New World is great and has awesome things to offer, and definitely doesn’t deserve the bs low scores it’s getting.
