Anora (2024)

Was definitely interested into this movie well before the hype, just wasn’t available near me until recently. I am happy that smaller marketed movies like this get some hype, good movies deserve to be pushed.

This is a good movie, but outside of Mickey Madison as Annie, I don’t know if this is as much awards bait as others would think. The basis of the plot is fine but the screenplay excels in character and dialogue. The realness in life really comes through the screen in all the characters interactions. It’s a fun story about flawed people going through shit, and it’s really entertaining.

The aesthetic of the film is a wonder, great cinematography, appropriate music and awesome editing. I wish I could have seen Anora in 35mm because this really is a movie for the cinephile that goes to film festivals. I really hope this opens up the doors for Madison, her commitment to this role is exceptional. Sean Baker is an exceptional story teller, great at showing how not every fairytale works out peels back the layers of life and of these characters.

Anora is a filmmakers film, maybe too intense for others, but at its core it works and is entertaining.
