This review comes from someone that really loves The Rock and his movies, I know the easy thing to do is just hate on him now, but to say that his movies are unwatchable is an overreaction. Red One doesn’t offer anything new, but it’s still a fun sleigh ride.
The biggest thing to say about this movie is just that it’s safe for both Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans. I like both a lot, but the hardcore charismatic ass kicker with strong morals is completely in The Rocks wheelhouse, the snarky and condescending a-hole is also something that Evans easily leans into in numerous amounts of projects. It’s just that for me, it’s a Christmas movie, and that in itself is safe. I can’t think of many Santa centric movies that really escape the stratosphere of top tier quality, a lot of the “best” Christmas movies have a ton of nostalgia attached to it that helps, I think this movie should be given a chance to give the newer generation their own kind of nostalgia.
Red One was originally supposed to be initially distributed on Amazon, so it’s not meant to be that gravitating. Streaming movies are made to just be played, not meant for big box office numbers. So, the extra seasoning just isn’t there for story, instead the meat of the film focuses on the look and having a very little negative space on camera and filling it with all of cast’s ego’s.
I personally enjoyed the movie a lot, I brought my kids to it and I felt like it did its job. It had fun moments with presents and cookies and snow. A bunch of the creatures here are entertaining for the kids as well, I freaking loved Agent Garcia, you can’t not want a literal bear hug from that guy There was a lot of fun moments that are worth the viewing, I think that their version of how Santa delivers presents is very unique and fitting for this movie, and it probably is my favorite interpretation of the Santa delivery system. However, it does feel like a bit of a letdown that the entirety of the movie doesn’t have its own sense of unique aesthetic to match the ending
It sucks that this movie has gotten a bad word of mouth, but in my opinion, it’s fun and worth a trip to the movie theater.
