When it comes down to it, this is probably going to be my vote for animated movie of the year.
The Wild Robot hits on all aspects, visuals, voice acting, story, emotion, entertainment! As a parent as well, it really gets you in the feels. Wanted to give my kids a group hug once it was over. It’s just so beautifully well done, and I see it as such an allegory of what being a parent really is.
Lupita Nyong’o as Roz is outstanding. Her performance as an emotionless robot that essentially develops emotions by self-overriding their programming is powerful. I took it as being a new parent and really having to change yourself as a person. You’re never really ready, and you can have all the knowledge in the world and still not know what to do.
Anyways, going back to the story. It’s so heartwarming. These animals are shown to be living in a civilization with certain ways of living, and it takes this outsider to come in and show them how different life can be. The story touches on so much outside of parenting, it shows accepting identity, your socio-economic role, and tribalism. But it does it in a way that is both appealing and enrapturing of attention to kids of all ages.
Chris Sanders, the director, has a lot of sleeper hits that I didn’t even realize, of course he’s good at story telling with themes of family, he literally created Lilo & Stitch. Literally Ohana…
The Wild Robot simultaneously gives you thought provoking story telling while giving you a fun adventure of just living life and accepting change you can do. Highly recommend.
