Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)

Sonic 3 is my favorite video game movie. It really has everything you would want in a video game movie, I would call it the closest thing to a perfect video game movie with having the perfect blend of entertainment for all ages.

First and foremost. Jim Carrey. Yes the Sonic of it all is great on its own, but Jim Carrey carries this movie. I know that there are many memes about him only doing roles if the script is amazing and here he is doing a movie costarring with a blue hedgehog… but if you really see what this script offered him you can truly understand why he would tackle the roll of Dr. Robotnik2. He absolutely kills both rolls, he gives both roles 100% and, yes they are similar, but they are different enough that you could probably not even know they were both Jim Carrey. Give all the flowers to the editing team as well, the scenes with both of them genuinely look like they are both there at all times. There is a dance scene in this movie, that literally only works because of Jim Carrey, I love all of the it. The rest of the live action cast is great as well, you have the return of the cast from the first 2 movies, and they don’t all get a lot of screen time, but the screen time they have is used to the max.

Ben Schwartz, Colleen O’ Shaughnessey, Idris Elba all return in fantastic fashion as the titular Sonic, Tails & Knuckles respectively. However, the introduction of Keanu Reeves bringing his John Wick persona to the role of Shadow the Hedgehog is outstanding. 4/4 when it comes to the voice casting, all heavy hitters. Definitely should be a case study for excellent voice casting honestly. The story of Shadow is tragic, and Reeves natural low roar works perfectly for such a hidden wrath of vengeance but more on the side of the calm before the storm.

The story is great, it’s basically an adaptation of the story from Sonic Adventure 2 and the Shadow the Hedgehog video games, and looking back at those games, it’s crazy that they were able to incorporate such harsh elements into children’s games, and here we are 20 plus years later and putting those same story beats into a PG film.

Visually, I think this is the best that you can have animated and live action blend together. For a lot of kids this is going to be there Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and justifiably so. The movie has jokes for everyone, there were parts that had me dying in my seat and then in the very next scene there is something both my children laugh their butts off. I personally think this is a rare case of movies in a film franchise really getting better with each movie.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is such a fun ride. A great popcorn film that has all the emotions that you can ask from an end of the year blockbuster.
