Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz attack a genre that has been done to death. The natural charisma that these two celebrities bring to the table are enough to bring this cookie cutter of a script to an elevated level. Still, besides the humor and action scenes, this movie is as generic as you can get. I was entertained a lot, but that’s just because I’m sure the funniest parts were Foxx and Diaz improvising because of their chemistry and talent, not because of the script.
I have no issues with the cast, but man the character of Alice is terrible. I have a teenage daughter and at her worst she is a million times better than her. I know her being terrible is the point but it’s not that funny. The allegory of continuously lying to your children their whole lives does not necessarily translate to having the worst child ever.
The movie is fun, but I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, Netflix has become the equivalent to the old days of direct to DVD times. These are movies to be played in the background of doing chores. Yes, they have big budgets, but like this movie, the visual quality is inconsistent. I do give it that I found this movie entertaining enough to give a sequel a shot, but I would be just fine if this movie was a one off.
