A very interesting screenplay and concept. It’s a very real story but it probably won’t hit the right feelings unless this situation is something that you have personally gone through. His Three Daughters presents a tale of sisters coming together to be there for their father for his last moments on this world.
Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen, & Natasha Lyonne play sisters who are so disconnected by age, life, geography & personalities. Such a common thing to experience in life honestly. You grow apart and experience your own life with all the decisions you make. The three actresses, who I am huge fans of individually, are stellar here. At first you think they each play the most stereotypical 3 types of sisters, but as the days pass you see how layered they are and how much is so unresolved, not just among each other, but with their own father.
The story is a simple one but powered and engineered by emotion and conflict. There isn’t a big twist nor is the rug pulled from under you, instead it dives you into a train wreck waiting to happen. Also, the climax and final conversation with their father absolutely wrecked me. The theme of so many things left unsaid can stay that way if you don’t take advantage of the time, we all take for granted.
I'm more invested in a story like this as I had to go through a similar process during the passings of my father and younger brother. Azazel Jacobs really knew how to deliver the story of pre grief and the internal struggles within the family circle, while simultaneously showing how beautiful it is to not be alone during those impossible times.
I loved this movie, it’s not for everyone, but with the setting and the story it could make for a great stage play as well. It’s emotionally moving and filled with incredible performances all around.
