Mothers Instinct (2024)

I’ve noticed that movies with French directors don’t always resonate with American audiences especially because American audiences are accustomed to outcomes that leave butterflies in your belly. International films don’t always give the happily ever after vibes. (see Emilia Pérez) and I think that adds a negative impact to audiences in the West, I think that’s part of the reason here why Mothers Instinct isn’t favorable.

I see a lot of script reasons, but the story doesn’t necessarily go where you want it go. But life is like that. Sometimes bad things happen. Man… do bad things happen here. This is definitely a thriller. The most terrible thing ever that can happen, happens. Yet, things still get worse as this destructive snowball keeps growing downhill.

I have no issues with the script, I do feel like the movie is a tad short and sometimes the pacing is inconsistent in the 2ndact. Still, the performances are so raw. Anne Hathaway and Josh Charles as the grieving parents deliver some of the most convincing performances ever. It’s cringy in the way that drives the story and it’s all completely understandable. Kudos to Jessica Chastain as well. The terror you live through because of the high stakes she’s going through is terribly entertaining.

Mothers Instinct is void of praise because of the overall story and hard to watch delivery of story. A miss for most, but the movie wanted you to feel disgusted, and for that, I hand out flowers.
